Art Deco Decadence Talks
I have already appeared in a BBC4 documentary, 'How Britains Took To The Skies' which received a very positive response where I was talking about social shifts in society and how society responded to the expanse in the rather decadent new fangled aeroplane travel.
I am more than happy to give lectures, talks and discussions on the many varied areas of Art Deco. I can come along to your local WI group or your local school or even to your home and give you a talk perhaps on how to introduce Art Deco into your existing style. I have even been approached by a cruise ship company and am in discussion with them. If you require my services I will be more than happy to help.
Art Deco Decadence in Writing
I am delighted to say that in collaboration with Daniel J Allen I have contributed to several written works that have been put into in flight magazines such as Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Etihad. Some of which are found in 1st class. I have always enjoyed writing and I am now offering my services in that region. Shopping Trips to the Art Deco Markets
and Shops of London and Paris
I am able to offer truly wonderful shopping experiences in London, for example let us meet at the start of the Burlington Arcade a world famous shopping mall, the very first of it's kind in the world! Burlington Arcade opened it's doors in 1819 and is now recognised as a historic and magnificent masterpiece. Let us relish this oasis of calm in just one of London's hidden treasures that is packed with luxurious accessories.
If we're in luck we'll find one of the Beadles who are guardians of the Arcade and let them tell us its history, which as you can imagine is a totally fascinating tale of how the Beadles came to be and what they are today, including the rules of conduct in the Burlington Arcade.
It will be here we can find authentic Rolex watches going back to the Art Deco period alongside the most exquisite jewellery in several of the salons in this wonderful place.
We can peruse every shop window and go in and find you that elusive piece, whether it be a Rolex, some fine jewels, the best quality writing materials, fine fragrances and top quality leather goods or anything else that takes your fancy. From simply elegant cashmere to the highest designer shoes or even a silver tea set that would grace and beautify any table, we shall be sure to find it here. Of course shopping can be a tiring experience however we shall take a more leisurely pace and cross the road from the Arcade to find ourselves a discreet but fabulously decadent restaurant where we can take tea and breakfast or just coffee and cake, in fact whatever takes your fancy.
From here and we can stroll the streets of Mayfair where we will find the Lalique store which is a truly and totally magnificent store with collections from small birds to large vases decorated with Grecian nymphs, the finest Champagne glasses to even door knobs and handles!! Again this store is a wonderfully calm environment where we shall be attended by knowledgeable staff who will be more than happy to assist you.
If you are an overseas visitor don't hesitate about purchasing any Lalique for all will be wrapped to the highest standards and then shipped to the address of your choice.
It is in this area we will find the couture houses of outstanding beauty such as Cartier, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Tiffany, Grieves and Hawkes and Bulgari to name but a few.
From this area we can take a taxi to the streets of Notting Hill Gate and the famous market of Portobello Road. Before we go there I have found the most decadent of all lighting shops, Jones Antique Lighting which sells authentic and original lighting from the 1920's and 1930's. There are fabulous chandalier lights, beautiful Tiffany lamps and wall lighting so divine they take your breath away and every single piece in this wonderful shop is totally authentic so if it is decadent lighting this is the shop for you.
There are many shops in the Portobello Road and there are a plethora of gorgeous items to be found.
This is just one of the shopping trips I can arrange for you and I would think that after a day shopping it would be time to take tea at either Claridges (www.claridges.co.uk) or the Park Lane Hotel both of which offer totally fabulous afternoon teas and why not if we fancy take a glass of Champagne with our tea! A truly beautiful way to spend a day.
There are many areas in and around Central London that have a selection of Art Deco shops one would be Alfies Antique Market (www.alfiesantiques.com)
which does have several gorgeous outlets and they have a rotating stock and it is a marvelous place to visit.
Another must see area is Camden Passage in North London and trading is mostly done on Wednesdays and Saturdays however, some shops are open on weekdays or by appointment. This is a total Art Deco paradise so, let's shop....
Our next offering is a shopping trip to Paris, this is the birth place of Art Deco and after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Moderne this city became a meca for all afecionados of this divine movement.
There are some stunning sights to be seen in Paris and Art Deco is everywhere and although there are many Couture houses, we will not be visiting them unless of course required, but to a weekend market place.
The market at St.Ouen is a fantastic place, at first glance it looks like nothing on earth especially if you get there too early but slowly very slowly the market wakes up with vendors turning up with their coffee and pastries throw up the shutters on a wonderful world of artistic design, prepare yourself for the largest flea market in the world with around 200,000 visitors each weekend it will get packed and you never know who you might bump into!
On arrival at the nearest metro station you will see vendors on the main street but it is not these we have come to see, let's delve into one of the worlds most fascinating markets. As those shutters go up be prepared for some dusty sights but peer closer and you will see a genuine Chiparus tucked away in a corner and at each and every one of these stall holders there is always something to delight. Here we will find everything from art work to clothing, from watches to jewellery.
These stall holders have been here for years and many go back to the origins of the market, literally a flea market where people from central Paris would come and dump their flea infested bedding. From that other items were disposed of here however the truism of 'one mans junk is another mans treasure' remains today.
Some of the original stall holders have done very well for themselves and they have left the maze of intoxicating stalls to small shops on the Rue des Rosiers.
What fantastic sights greet us here!! Amazing 1930's bakelite jewellery, high end furniture retailing at 15,000e and more. This street runs parallel to the market and leads into L'entrepot and everything is large scale here, bookcases and stair cases from grand elegant homes could be stood next to a garden pavilion and some of these objects will simply take your breath away.
On my first experience of this I had to have a sit down as I could not believe what I was seeing, that cup of sweet tea sure helped me recover my senses. I had never seen anything like this especially on this scale, every where you turned the art deco surprises got bigger and bigger, just awesome.
With the size of the Vermason market and all those fabulous shops to look into to make the best of this particular trip a tour guide can be booked in advance and they know exactly where to find the objects you are looking for.
One last tip, as the market is very well known for it's expensive pieces please please take care of your wallet and handbag as regrettably pickpockets do roam the market, that said there is very little trouble here. It is here we can spend an hour or two or even a day or two as the market is open on both days of the weekend.
If you would like me to organise a shopping trip for you, then please, do not hesitate to contact me.
